My (Almost) Literary Ghost Story

My (Almost) Literary Ghost Story When I was in college, I interned at Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta. I grew up in Jonesboro, the inspiration for  Gone with the Winds Tara, a city where  GWTW murals are plastered on the sides of buildings and where an actor in costume takes bus-loads of tourists around the small city, pointing out historical and literary landmarks. I drove the hour into the big city and worked at the house where Margaret Mitchell wrote the famed novel, the house that has caught fire twice and has now been preserved as a museum to the writer. It is also the house where I had my only brush if we can call it that with a literary ghost story. What is it about literary ghosts that appeals to me? I find something terribly romantic in the idea of a spectral Emily Dickinson roaming the halls in her white dress, or in a ghostly Thoreau clomping around Walden Pond. Whenever I visit a historic home where an author has lived, I find myself warring between two equally strong feelings:  the hope that there is a ghostly presence, and the fear that there might be a ghostly presence. The actual house, which Mitchell called The Dump, has been burned down twice. It was built back up, in replica, and Mitchells apartment was recreated to look like the original; the only feature youll see thats original to the house is the tile outside of her apartment on the first floor. During the summer, I worked as an assistant at the creative writing camps. Area children came to take field trips and do writing exercises and hone their skills as poets, story-writers, and essayists. They sat around large tables and scribbled in their notebooks and shared their work aloud. As a camp assistant, the bulk of my job was to transcribe their stories into an anthology that would be distributed at weeks end, at the reading they would do for their parents. Camp took place on the third floor of the house, a  space usually rented out for events. I had always heard stories about the house. Janitors said that after locking all the doors that led onto the balconies of the house, they would check again to find those doors standing open. Objects would have been relocated. Someone once told me that a reading had been done on the house and the conclusion was that Ms. Mitchell was indeed still there, and she did not like that people talked about her as if she were dead. On camp mornings, I was the first in the house. I came in through a side yard, and I could take the stairs up to the third floor the stairs that began right outside Ms. Mitchells apartment or I could take the elevator, which was separated from the apartment by a door. Even though I was able-bodied, I almost always took the elevator. Did I want to see her? Was I scared to see her? And did I even really believe that there was anything to see? I wanted to have a jovial mortal-ghost relationship. I wanted to wish her a good morning, skip up the steps, pat the muzzle of the lions head newel post cap, an action she herself had repeated everyday, for good luck. But I couldnt make myself do it. I stood on the other side of the closed door, protected from her apartment, and silently thought to myself, I dont want to see you. I dont want to see you. I dont want to see you. One hot afternoon, as I sat in the hallway on the third floor, transcribing the childrens work onto my computer, I smelled something burning. I looked around. I saw nothing. No smoke from the kitchen. It had to be a ghost, I thought. The house had been burned twice, I rationalized, so maybe her ghostly presence smelled like burning. I got up from the floor where I sat and I looked in the two front rooms, which were empty. I went into the room where the kids sat. The burning smell was stronger. I mentioned it casually to the teacher. (I did not delineate for her my logic of a ghostly presence smelling liked the charred remains of a house that has twice been burnt down.) One of the kids had lit a piece of paper on fire. She pointed to the tea lights she had burning on the table. Writers ambience, she told me by way of explanation. I had felt fear. I had felt hope. What was it I feared? And what was it I hoped  for? A good story for cocktail parties? Some imprint of literary talent, passed from her to me? Or do we sometimes wish for that presence of writers who have left us because we feel a part of their essence still wanders the halls of an old house? Do we wish for their continued existence the way we wish for good books never to end? Whatever the reason, and whatever my hopes or fears, I did the only thing that I thought I could truly gain from my experiences with Margaret Mitchell:  I sat down and began to write again. ____________________ Did you know that Book Riot has a  YouTube channel? The LGBTQ community has made great progress in the last decade they have become more open about their community and have gained rights that they should have always had. Even though the community has made progress they still have a long way way to go especially within the workplace . The legendary battle of Thermopylae, in 480 B.C.E, demonstrated the strength, courage and bravery of the Spartan Army that went up against the Persians. The Spartans held off the Persian army of Xerxes for two days until their position was flanked by a secret trail. However, in the face of unbeatable odds and with the knowledge of a victory being almost impossible, they fought with the utmost confidence in themselves and proved that the Spartan army was one of the strongest armies in Greece, even though they were eventually defeated. However there are many factors that threaten a healthy economy such as inflation, economic recessions and many other factors. Despite all these threats and inevitable slumps and declines in economy, an economy can be monitored and as such Consumer Price Index is one of the most important economic indicators. Using consumer pricing index, the health of the economy can be in check and the state can take necessary preventive measures otherwise not taken could lead to devastating effects in the form of high unemployment, bankruptcies, major financial losses etc. The CPI is a fixed-basket price index as it represents the price of a constant quantities basket of goods and services purchased by the average consumer. CPI is one of the most frequently used  statistics for identifying periods of inflation or deflation. This is  because large rises in CPI during a short period of time typically denote periods of inflation and  large drops in CPI during a short period of time usually  mark  periods of  deflation. It is compiled by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. In economics, money supply is the total amount of money available in an economy at a particular point in time. There are several ways to define â€Å"money†, but standard measures usually include currency in circulation and demand deposits. The gross domestic product (GDP) or gross domestic income (GDI) is a basic measure of a country’s economic performance and is the market value of all final goods and services made within the borders of a country in a year. It is a fundamental measurement of production and is very often positively correlated with the standard of living. An interest rate is the price a borrower pays for the use of money they do not own, for instance a small company might borrow from a bank to kick start their business, and the return a lender receives for deferring the use of funds, by lending it to the borrower. Interest rates are normally expressed as a percentage rate over the period of one year. Stock Price in this paper is referred to as Stock Market index which is based on a statistical compilation of the share prices of a number of representative stocks. Adding predictors has the effect of increasing the difference between R2 with hat and R2. Adjusted R2 is also useful in comparing among models. ANOVA table and definition of â€Å"mean squared† terms. The sums-of-squares terms and related statistics are often summarized in an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) table: [pic] Source= source of variation SS= sum-of-squares term df= degrees of freedom for SS term MS= â€Å"mean squared† terms The mean squared terms are the sums-of-squares terms Standard error of the estimate. The residual mean square (MSE) is the sample estimate of the variance of the regression residuals. The population value of the error term is sometimes written as ? e2 while the sample estimate is given by se2 = MSE(2. 8) where MSE has been defined previously. The square root of the residual mean square is called the root-mean-square error (RMSE), or the standard error of the estimate. [pic](2. 9) The subscript â€Å"c† is attached (RMSEc) in (4. ) to distinguish the RMSE derived from calibration from the root-mean-square error derived by cross-validation (see later). F ratio or â€Å"overall F†. Recall that the explanatory power of a regression is given by the regression R2, which is computed from sums-of-squares terms. The F-ratio, or overall F, which is computed from the mean squared terms in the ANOVA table, estimates the statistical significance of the regression equation. The F-ratio is given by [pic](2. 10) The advantage of the F- ratio over R2 is that the F- ratio takes into account the degrees of freedom, which depend on the sample size and the number of predictors in the model. A model can have a high R2 and still not be statistically significant if the sample size is not large compared with the number of predictors in the model. The F- ratio incorporates sample size and number of predictors in an assessment of significance of the relationship. The significance of the F- ratio is obtained by referring to a table of the F distribution, using degrees of freedom {df1,df2}, where df1 and df2 are the degrees of freedom for the regression mean square and residual mean square from the ANOVA table. If the regression assumptions on the residuals are satisfied, including the normality assumption, then the sampling distribution of an estimated regression coefficient is normal with a variance proportional to the residual mean square (MSE). The variance of the estimator also depends on the variances and covariances of the predictors. The idea is best illustrated for the case of simple linear regression, for which the variance of the regression coefficient is given by [pic](2. 12) Where Se2 is the residual mean square, xi is the value of the predictor in year xi with hat is the mean of the predictor, and the summation is over the n years in the calibration period. The 100 (1 ? ?) % confidence interval is [pic], where t? /2 is obtained from s t distribution with n-2 degrees of freedom. For more than one predictor, the confidence intervals for regression can be computed similarly, but the equation is more complicated. The equation for the variances and covariances of estimated coefficients is expressed in matrix terms by [pic](2. 13) where X is the time series matrix of predictors. This equation returns a matrix, with the variances of the parameters along the diagonal, and the covariances as the off-diagonal elements (Weisberg 1985, p. 44). The appropriate degrees of freedom of the t distribution is df = n ? K ? 1, where K is the number of predictors in the model, and n is the sample size. Multicolinearity The predictors in a regression model are often called the â€Å"independent variables†, but this term does not imply that the predictors are themselves independent statistically from one another. In fact, for natural systems, the predictors can be highly intercorrelated. Multicolinearity† is a term reserved to describe the case when the intercorrelation of predictor variables is high. It has been noted that the variance of the estimated regression coefficients depends on the intercorrelation of predictors. Haan (2002) concisely summarizes the effects of multicolinearity on the regression model. Multicolinearity does not invalidate the regression model in the sense that the predictive value of the equation may still be good as long as the prediction are based on combinations of predictors within the same multivariate space used to calibrate the equation. But there are several negative effects of multicolinearity. First, the variance of the regression coefficients can be inflated so much that the individual coefficients are not statistically significant – even though the overall regression equation is strong and the predictive ability good. Second, the relative magnitudes and even the signs of the coefficients may defy interpretation. For example, the regression weight on a tree-ring index in a multivariate regression equation to predict precipitation might be negative even though the tree-ring index by itself is positively correlated with precipitation. Third, the values of the individual regression coefficients may change radically with the removal or addition of a predictor variable in the equation. In fact, the sign of the coefficient might even switch. Signs of multicolinearity. Signs of multicolinearity include 1) high correlation between pairs of predictor variables, 2) regression coefficients whose signs or magnitudes do not make good physical sense, 3) statistically non-significant regression coefficients on important predictors, and 4) extreme sensitivity of sign or magnitude of regression coefficients to insertion or deletion of a predictor variable. Variance Inflation Factor (VIF). The Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) is a statistic that can be used to identify multicolinearity in a matrix of predictor variables. â€Å"Variance Inflation† refers here to the mentioned effect of multicolinearity on the variance of estimated regression coefficients. Multicolinearity depends not just on the bivariate correlations between pairs of predictors, but on the multivariate predictability of any one predictor from the other predictors. Accordingly, the VIF is based on the multiple coefficient of determination in regression of eachpredictor in multivariate linear regression on all the other predictors: pic](2. 14) where Ri2 is the multiple coefficient of determination in a regression of the ith predictor on all other predictors, and i VIF is the variance inflation factor associated with the ith predictor. Note that if the ith predictor is independent of the other predictors, the variance inflation factor is one, while if the ith predict or can be almost perfectly predicted from the other predictors, the variance inflation factor approaches infinity. In that case the variance of the estimated regression coefficients is unbounded. Multicolinearity is said to be a problem when the variance inflation factors of one or more predictors becomes large. How large it appears to be a subjective judgement. According to Haan (2002), some researchers use a VIF of 5 and others use a VIF of 10 as a critical threshold. These VIF values correspond, respectively, to Ri2 values of 0. 80 and 0. 90. Some compute the average VIF for all predictors and declare that an average â€Å"considerably† larger than one indicates multicolinearity (Haan, 2002). At any rate, it is important to keep in mind that multicolinearity requires strong intercorrelation of predictors, not just non-zero intercorrelation. The VIF is closely related to a statistic call the tolerance, which is 1/VIF. Some statistics packages report the VIF and some report the tolerance (Haan 2002). 3. MODEL SPESIFICATION AND DATA SOURCE Based on the theory review in the previous section, we build the following specification to capture the determinants of money supply in Indonesia: CPI = ? 0 + ? 1M1 + ? 2GDP + ? 3IR + ? 4SP + ? The variables are defined as followed: 1. Money supply (M1) is M0 (physical currency) and demand deposits, which are checking accounts. This is used as a measurement for economists trying to quantify the amount of money in circulation. The M1 is a very liquid measure of the money supply, as it contains cash and assets that can quickly be converted to currency. 2. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the income of individuals or nations after adjusting for inflation. 3. Consumer price index (CPI) is an index number measuring the average price of consumer goods and services purchased by households. 4. Interest rate (IR) is a fee paid on borrowed capital. . Share Price (SP) is the price of one share of stock. This paper uses quarterly data, from quarter 1 of 1996 to quarter 2 of 2008 that is taken from International Financial Statistic. We also use SPSS software to regress the model above. 4. VALUATION 4. 1Model Estimation We will present the result of data analysis using Multiple Regression Analysis. Multiple Regression analysis pr ovides an equation that predicts raw score on a quantitative [pic] variable from raw scores on [pic] variables, with[pic]. The best model is indicated by the highest Adjusted R2 and the lowest standard errors. In this study, consumer price indexes (CPI) were predicted from the following variables: money supply (M1), gross domestic product (GDP), interest rate (IR) and share price (SP). The sample size[pic]is 50. 4. 2Bivariate correlation In this part, we will observe the strength of the linear relationship between each independent variable and CPI. Table 1. They are consumer price index, interest rate, stock price, GDP, and money supply [M1]. The data are selected from Indonesia international financial statistics. In the recent years Indonesia has been successfully controlling its money supply to get stability in economic circumstances. From the study we found out that there is strong relationship between consumer price index [CPI]and GDP. When the Gross Domestic Product [GDP] increases, it will also increase consumer price index as these two have linear relationship. Also there is strong correlation between money supply and consumer price index, which means that mean of CPI increase when money supply increases. Addition to this there is positive correlation between stock price and CPI, when stock price increase it tend to increase CPI. However there is negative correlation between interest rate and CPI, when interest rate increases, CPI decreases. From our finding it shows that R-square is 96 percent, which means it is a good model to describe the relation between CPI and other variables we use in the study. REFERENCES Lawrence S. Why Human Should Not Explore Outer Space Essay Example Paper Why Human Should Not Explore Outer Space Essay Introduction Beginning with the first landing on the moon forty years ago by American astronauts, several NASA space flights followed with accounts of tragedies. Santucci (2005) narrates that since the United States started to send space shuttles with men in them (not robots), several astronauts lost their lives either on land or in the air. The Challenger exploded in the 1980s killing all of its crew. In 2003, the most recent one, the Columbia craft burned before it made its entrance to the earth’s atmosphere; all crew died. Lives were lost; bereaved families grieved; and enormous money was lost. If NASA of the United States (US singly mentioned because no reports were disclosed about the Russian cosmonauts casualties if ever) is bent on pursuing its space programs for their own motivations, it is highly recommended that robots should be put on board instead of men to go into the explorations. After all, robots are cheaper than the lives of humans and they can prove useful for some observ ation tasks (Whittington, 2006). Only money will be lost and the cherished lives of men are not put to waste. The earth is consistently beset with numerous problems causing peacelessness: poverty, hunger, diseases, natural calamities, unpredictable catastrophies. Time and again, the various media carry the news about hungered people dominating the earth. The outbreak of flu pandemic is not a new phenomenon and can claim millions of lives as did almost a century ago in 1918-1919 in the case of a new H1N1 pandemic called the â€Å"Spanish flu† (WebMD, 2009). The recession in the United States did not only dramatically affect the Americans but generally affected the whole world economy. Undoubtedly, science has advanced by leaps and bounds to the comfortable advantage of man in so many ways. On the other hand, although science has taken astronomical strides in technology to the benefit of man without undermining the accompanying apparent disadvantages to civilization, it is the belief of this discourse that man should not explore outer space. At the apex of this counterargument to explore outer space is the safety of the astronauts followed by the unimaginable huge amount of money that each exploration requires. Money is what is needed to fire the engines of development on earth, not outside of it. Earthlings have more urgent needs of money for survival and peace. Sending astronauts to the outer space does not only make them the observers and experimenters, but they also become the objects of experiments and put at risk being the observed (Tort, 2005). The issue whether man should explore outer space is a matter of ethical relevance rather than any other subject of concern. The standpoint of Stephen Dick, the Chief historian of NASA, (Tort, 2005) which points to the ethical consideration of outer space exploration undergirds the stance of this paper. He poses his point, thus, â€Å"is it ethical to explore [outer space] when there is so much that needs to be done on earth?† Tort (2005) contends that if exploring outer space is directed at national or world security, then the lives of the astronauts at risk, risked, or lost in exchange for the exploration may become worth sacrificing because of the nobility of purpose. Why Human Should Not Explore Outer Space Essay Body Paragraphs There are always two sides to a coin. Arguments that favor exploration of the outer space are many. One of the strongest stance in favor of firstly, space exploration and secondly, by human astronauts is Britain’s Royal Astronomical Society led by physicist Frank Close. He concluded after the Society’s commissioned study that it is no substitute for human exploration as compared to a robot exploration stating thus, â€Å"profound scientific questions relating to the history of the solar system and the existence of life beyond Earth can best – perhaps only – be achieved by human exploration on the Moon or Mars, supported by appropriate automated systems† (Whittington, 2006). Other arguments will be presented as much as possible along with the counterarguments that this discourse can cover and space considered. The paper of Tort (2005) has mainly served as reference for the arguments for his attention-grabbing examination of the issue viewing it from a rational and humane dimension. Some quarters especially among scientists contend that space exploration has definite justifications beneficial to civilization. Tort (2005) has classified the rationales of outer space exploration into the utilitarian and non-utilitarian rationales. Directly, space exploration particularly the satellites make many things excitingly possible like â€Å"communication, earth observation, disaster management, positioning systems, environment monitoring, telemedicine and research facilities.† Through space exploration science could possibly construct, if not reconstruct, the origins of life from evidences that may be found in the process. In addition, either Mars or the Moon could be fit for human habitation or else a dumping ground for human wastes. The studies and researches conducted by scientists are meant to explore aiming to explain and unearth more knowledge. However, these studies and researches do not pose as risks to human life; and that if ever, it is to the minimum risk. Exploration of the outer space, it must be understood, is not much in the position of using or sending robots and that any exploration makes use of human beings for obvious reasons. Since man feels, observes, analyzes, and experiments, it is still people who are preferred to be sent to man the spaceships and not robots. As Tort says, â€Å"if the only goal of the Apollo program had been science, would it have been acceptable to expose astronauts to a 50% chance of not returning?† Risking the lives of astronauts is too much expense. The indirect rationale of the utilitarian view theorizes that some minerals or gases useful to man could create industries and corporations expanded, thereby create employment, and stimulate economy. The same belief is supported by Scarlato (2009) stating that â€Å"Space exploration can both increase civilizational resilience and yield important discoveries, furthering scientific understanding of ourselves and the world we live in.† The counterargument to this stance is plain: There was no concrete gain from the first space shuttle when it went to the moon forty years ago except man’s claimed â€Å"success† to have landed and set foot on the moon after expending real huge amount of money. The other gain from that space adventure is the calling of the return to the moon and now, including a possible exploration to Mars. In addition, it is claimed that it is through space exploration that developed â€Å"computers, textile, optics or mechanics† (Tort, 2005). The counterargument lies not just on the financial side of the exploration but that the options have not been exhausted on earth. Tort (2005) continues that the non-utilitarian point of view looks at space exploration from four areas: fascination of space, cultural impact of natural resources, cultural impact and exotic cultures, and strategic rationale. First, the wildest imagination of man is triggered by e xploring the outer space. Then businesses are vying for space activities in the name of prestige. People interested in the exploration have exciting thoughts of exotic cultures somewhere out there. Finally, the country in the world particularly from among the rich ones who may succeed in the exploration will put themselves as the most powerful country among countries of the world. On the other hand, man’s fascination and prestige do not necessarily find their fulfillment in outer space exploration. Also, there is no certainty as to the availability of natural resources either on the moon or in Mars that may only result into the dismay of ambitious corporations and businesses such as Rutan and Musk. It is most dangerous to go for adventure in the search for exotic cultures by going into outer space exploration. To vie for the â€Å"most powerful† country through exploration is extremely non-sensible and only serving irrational scientific whims and desires. All the argum ents and justifications to continue the exploration of the outer space by human is downgrading man’s intellect and surely serving man’s overwhelming greed and pride. For those among the people who believe in God, man should intellectually reflect that the world’s great religions talk of the past, the present, and foretold the future. If at all, there is something out in space, on the moon or in Mars, they could have been told in the Holy Books of God. The conflict between science and religion is surely going beyond bounds. Man’s adventurism and pride can only be resolved through the persistent questions of religion and ethics.
